Considered a traditional carving, oak is characterized by its strength and sturdiness, with a very clear grain. Consisting of dozens of species of varying colors, white and red oaks are usually more common in carving. A very popular choice of wood for carving, English oak is durable and strong, but difficult to work with.

White oak, also known by the scientific name Quercus alba, is a strong, rot-resistant wood that is widely used due to its cost-effectiveness. Highly durable and resistant to the environment, it provides great results when cutting, by hand or with tools. However, high shrinkage values do not provide dimensional stability and contact with iron, especially when wet, can become discolored and tarnished.
White oak patio wood has a light to medium brown color and an almost white sapwood that doesn't always contrast with the patio wood. The grain is straight and coarse, with an uneven texture. The endgrain is ring porous and consists of about two to four rows of large early wood pores and small late wood pores in a radial arrangement.
Also known as Quercus rubra, red oak is light to medium brown in color with a reddish tinge of heartwood and an almost white to light brown sapwood. However, color alone is not enough to distinguish red oak from white oak. Red oak has a straight, rough and uneven grain with large pores, but unlike white oak, it is less resistant to decay and insects and tends to stain when exposed to water.

Hand cutting and chiseling techniques are suitable for red oak, although similar to white oak, it has a high shrinkage value and may not maintain its dimensional stability. Popular uses include furniture and flooring due to the strength and durability of wood.
This popular hardwood can be difficult to work with due to the sensitivity of the grain to the direction in which the design is engraved. Hardness can also be a challenge for beginners, who should avoid oak until more practice and skill are developed to allow for better control over tools and machinery.
The simple design allows for better cutting accuracy, as detail can be lost due to the difficulty of cutting oak. Practicing on a spare piece of oak will help you better estimate how long the project will take and the skill level required.
Carbon paper is commonly used in cutting to transfer designs to wood as it simplifies the process and initial design.
